Sustainable Holiday Gift Guide

This holiday season, you don’t have to compromise your eco-friendly lifestyle when giving gifts. We have compiled a list of ideas to help you find ethically-sourced, sustainable gift items and some methods of incorporating reusing and recycling into your gift packaging, too.

THRIFT AND ANTIQUE

Mass-produced clothing, jewelry, and household items are incredibly wasteful. A great way to counter that waste and extend the life of a product, however, is thrifting. Gorgeous, rare items can be found at the thrift or antique store. If you have someone in your life who loves all things vintage, or someone who appreciates gifts other than the most popular items on the market, shopping second hand this holiday season is the way to go.

HOMEMADE ALL THE WAY

When was the last time you made a homemade gift for someone you love? Perhaps it’s time to bring this old childhood tradition back. Homemade gifts are a great way to practice your eco-friendly lifestyle and create a personal gift that shows someone just how much you care about them.

Along with using reusable materials to craft a gift, you could even bake or cook and present that to your loved one. What’s better, and less wasteful, than a gift you can eat?

RECYCLED WRAPPING PAPER

Every year, Americans waste upwards of 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper. So do your part to help eliminate that waste by getting creative about your holiday wrapping.

Use paper from years past to make a boho-looking collage, round-up old newspapers to wrap your gifts with, scrounge for household items that could make the perfect package. Even old fabric could be used to create a beautiful gift to open on Christmas morning! If all else fails, make sure to seek out wrapping paper made from recycled paper or that features a sustainable seal of approval.

SHOP SMALL-SHOP LOCAL

Although it’s not a cardinal rule, and there are some significant exceptions, the larger the company, the less sustainable they might be. A great way to help the planet and small businesses and artists are to skip the big name brands this holiday season.

Shopping locally can help reduce waste caused by shipping and can benefit your town and community. In addition, shopping small, whether through Etsy or other avenues, can aid in supporting artists and making for some truly unique and sustainable gifts.

SUSTAINABLE HAIR AND BODY CARE

Thankfully, some holiday gifts, like hair and body care, can be sustainable without making any sacrifices. In fact, sustainable hair care is even better than those that use unnecessary chemicals and artificial fragrances.
